Areas That Are Never Cleaned In Your Home and How To Fix It

Some of the dirtiest areas in your home are ones that are almost never cleaned. Attics, crawlspaces, and basements are mostly only cleaned when people are moving in or out of the space or if there is an emergency like a flood, sewer backups, pest infestations, mold, fire structural damage, and more. Choosing to be proactive about maintaining these areas will not only make it easier when it comes to moving time but will help you prevent these types of damages before they start.

We know that cleaning these areas can seem extremely daunting so we’ve put together a helpful guide on how to tackle the task.

Take Everything Out

You want to begin with removing everything from the space start sorting through it. It’s helpful to create different piles for things as you go. Try having a keep pile, a throwaway pile, and a donate pile. Separating the items into categories will help make the job feel less daunting.

Once you have it separated into piles focus on one pile at a time.

Take the items you have decided to keep and put them into waterproof storage containers. Opting to use waterproof storage containers over cardboard boxes will protect your items better and make it easier when you need to move the containers around later. Don’t forget to label the containers to make it easier to find the items you need in the future.

Bag all of the trash up and put it out for trash pick up, bring it to the dump, or hire a junk removal service to come to pick it up.

Go through the donate pile and make sure all of the items are suitable for donation. Look for cracks, stains, rips, or other damage that might make the item unsuitable for donations. Take the unsuitable items and add them to the trash pile. Then pack up the other items for donation.

Assess The Damage

Once you have removed all of the items you had stored in the area, you can have a really good look at any damages that might have been hiding.

Closely examine the space for water damage, holes, mold, cracks, pests, and leaks. If you find any damage hire a professional to come in and take care of the damage before you continue.

Clean & Pack Away

Now that the space has been cleared out and checked over for damages it is time to start cleaning.

Start with a really good sweeping and then start mopping and cleaning the walls. Make sure you are using the right cleaners for the job. There might be untreated wood or exposed insulation in these areas. Make sure you have done research on how to upkeep these types of materials before you start throwing whatever is around the house up there.

Once everything is sparkling clean you can move your containers back into the space.

Remember to schedule the next time you want to clean out the space to keep it manageable. We recommend you do it every six months - one year. If you stay on top of it, it will be easier the next time you do it.
